There is a field of work called Marin Style NLP. It is an entity by its own right; living, breathing, and evolving throughout all time and space.
I – Introduction
Dear Marin-ese (Marin Style NLP people),
This is my journal entry communicating my relationship with the field of work called Marin NLP. I write this in hope that it sheds greater light on the body of work that sits at the apex of the discipline called Appreciating the Human Construct. Of what it means to live in relation to self, other-Selves and Life itself. And additionally, to shed light on the stance I have taken as an apprentice to the field called Marin Style NLP.
The Marin-Style Body of change work is a being whose birth, sustaining, and progress can be attributed to many stakeholders—Carl & Ruth-Anne Buchheit (co-founder of Marin NLP), Michelle Masters (NLP Trainer), Carla Camou (NLP Trainer), and its many loving predecessors, teachers, trainers, facilitators, and affiliates.
Its significance cannot be overstated. What Sir Isaac Newton brought to the understanding of celestial motion, Marin-style NLP has brought to the understanding of personal and professional transformation.
Sir Isaac Newton gave birth to classical mechanics, the foundation for most things in our civilization today such as; transport, infrastructure, and housing. Our teachers gave birth to Marin Style NLP, reinforcing, and refining the architecture that supports humankind in exercising their creational authority—with full respect for what is not yet the way they would like it.
OMG. WTF? (Just shoot me!) Okay. What would I like?
II – The Aha-Experience
I first experienced Marin Style NLP when I booked Carl & Ruth-Anne Buchheit (co-founder and lead trainer) for a private session to resolve my Suffering with regards to my dying father (Oh Cheng Low). I was building my business on my bedside table, and caring for dad (trying to save him, actually) while his health faded in the room next door. It was the most painful 8 months of my life; guilt, anger, heart-break, hope and despair. It didn’t show on my face. So no one knew. Till I met Carl.
In just two hours, he helped release the stress of my system, without making me wrong for the life made myself to date. It was a deep sense of peace and satisfaction that I can only imagine to be present at the passing moment of someone who has lived life full and well, no regrets. Subsequently, my results took quantum leaps personally, interpersonally and professionally. That was just one session.
From there, I have gone on to also work privately with Carla Camou, Michelle Masters and senior practitioners such as Kendra Current. And to attend many courses and learn from them. Even till today, I am continually compelled to continue my journey, so that I will teach others to do the same too.
III – The Business
Contrary to business coaching or mainstream transformational models—Marin Style NLP gives breathing space to the immensity of changes that can unfold only in a single session. It presupposes that much learning can continue in just one session. In comparison, the marketplace often sells subscribership models or retainer packages that, whether consciously or not, presupposes the client needs that many more sessions. And likely, that is exactly what they will need. Neither wrong nor right, it is my observation. Both are useful in their respective contexts.
But arguably, from a cash flow perspective, Marin NLP has a challenging business model. The focus is on a human being continuing their learning within and of Life. Not so much client retention and cashflow generation. But my sense is, it is a necessary challenge, business-wise. It’s greater focus on the individual is what gives Marin Style NLP its distinction. It is the entities’ dignity that it can cause that form of lasting personal change in the lives of thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and millions even. I believe this is the greater IPO at play.
Those who align and see this, I believe, are in flow with the field called Marin NLP. Because to date, its business has sustained through word of mouth. Through magical connections and instigations that lie outside the logic and structures of a marketing or sales funnel. Endorsing that stance, and presupposing the work has a way of taking care of business, opens a space for the practitioner to grow their practice in the strangest, most wonderful, and uncertain of ways.
I trust that as practitioners and the future teachers of the work, working with the field will facilitate the unfolding of our intentions for self, and the work itself. This is not to say that individual contributions can’t help Marin NLP evolve, and that we shouldn’t express our voice. But it is to say, that like any change, a deep respect to the system’s present state must be there before we can define and move towards a clearer new outcome.
IV – Apprenticeship
Which leads to my stance as an apprentice to the field of work. Contrary to my initial instincts to subordinate to the co-founder Carl Buchheit and head trainers Michelle Masters and Carla Camou, and obsess/revel at their awesomeness (which I still do)—I realize the entity has a full right to be a being of its own. It is much more than one man or one woman. Its teachers and long-standing members too, no matter how experienced or elegant they are, are in essence still apprentices to the field. Longer-serving? Yes. And of great contribution.
And though its parents, seniors and key influencers hold weight in the system that can swing its fate, I find it necessary, and more useful to to relate to it as a being with an intention of its own. Because the individuals who hold great weight, don’t and won’t always agree with another—even though their spirits and hearts be coherent. That is expected. We are human beings. Being at odds with self and others, however little or large, is our trademark.
However, the entity called Marin NLP, includes the DNA and choices of all of them. It is a representation of the unified field called Marin NLP. So to build rapport with it, just like a programmer does with a subject, enriches the information and choices that become available to the apprentice who seeks to inherit, express, and progress the spirit of its work. I hold that sustaining this stance is a key piece to the process of Marin Style NLP mastery. It is in the relationship that then unfolds from this stance, that I find I can sense answers to:
- With regards to the way Marin NLP is … what would I like?
- What would you like … Marin NLP?
- I would love, absolutely adore teaching and sharing your value … how?
I have come to realize that as an apprentice to the work, it is wiser to take upon it with great patience, attention to depth, and a full respect that the entity called Marin Style NLP, is much bigger than you, or any “I”.
Though I am 30 years old on this planet, I am merely 3.5 years old in the universe of Marin Style NLP. A baby. That is not to say I devalue my significance. It is to acknowledge that I know my place, and I appreciate I have one. And that the place I sit in will evolve, given time, understanding, new choices, and a maturation (Marin-ation) with the work.
So I have learned to reach out to Marin NLP, take what it can provide, give what I can, respond to the ways it reaches, and run full throttle with that. Never forgetting the roots of my own expression of its change work. It is no different to Family Systems.
Acknowledging lineage lends great power.
Bert Hellinger said, with regards to Family Constellations, that the work chooses its facilitators. I believe it is no different for Marin Style NLP. It chooses its facilitators. It chooses its apprentices. Learning the work deeply, encourages a service to the work.
This is something I have come to adopt to accelerate my learning. Partly by accident because for ecological reasons, I have not had the fortune to sustain my time spent in the US (I am based in Sydney, Australia). So from a distance, in my heart and in my thoughts, I repeatedly switch into the field of Marin Style NLP—to listen, to feel, and to learn from its heart.
No suprise, the focus is on what I would like primarily first. And the fields want if any, is encouraging me to continue learning. Not to “save it” or “change it.” Not at all. The question it wants us all to get is “What would you like?”. Period.
V – Horizons to Explore
The principles of Marin Style NLP, which may be first captured by the mind, takes the practitioner time before it is integrated on a cellular level, in the heart, and even the Soul.
Take a look at the IPO. It is arguably the Rome that all roads lead to in Marin NLP. In my time, I have been blessed to revisit it repeatedly, only to be in awe at how limited my understanding of it previously was. And equally excited for the many distinctions to come.
This re-entry is what I seek. To re-enter the same learnings, with curiosity, awe and amazement—such that new learnings may emerge. To know that the process of instigating what they refer to as Full Appreciating Awareness (FAA) puts focus on the learning and the mastering, less so the end goals of recognition, status (e.g. teacher, master practitioner) and material reward. Though those are not wrong nor discouraged, they are stations on the journey of communications mastery. There is a whole horizon to explore.
A journey of many years. The distinctions that come with the IPO are a perpetuity.
The IPO is just one presupposition of many. Presuppositions are points that become vortices that spiral forever, as I explore it with greater definition. Despite how much ground has been covered, there is just so much more. It is not a discipline that I can master within months or years. It’s is more like decades, a lifetime and many lifetimes. I believe this is what makes the discipline such a worthy pursuit.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The height of the pinnacle determines the breadth of the base.” In the martial arts, we are also taught that the advanced, more complex techniques are simply sophisticated expressions of the basics. Without strong roots, trees will fall irrespective of the strength of its trunk and branches. In service to this principle, I want to continue to water the seed, give it sun, and lots of loving song 🙂
VI – Becoming a Teacher
I look at other Teacher Assistants (TA’s) at Marin NLP, and I envisage a day where I am by their side, co-training students in the delicate art-form. The thought of that brings me a positive K. To date though, no clear pathway to becoming a teacher has been defined. Just as historically, it has occurred organically and miraculously. Perhaps that itself is the pathway, inviting the practitioner to discover their own way of relaying the material.
VII – Concluding Remarks
Everybody, whether through Carl or its many loving teachers, affiliates and practitioners, has a unique and profound entry experience with the work. Some cry and feel less constrained by taunting emotions, others experience rapid results in their careers and businesses, and some people, don’t really know what they got specifically–though they have a knowing sense that they did get something.
Things change in their lives, without them remembering things being any different.
With regards to the many wonderful ways people may welcome this work, I find there is a common experience across all who engage in it. And that is, whoever experiences the work has a chance to re-look at the mirror, and to a greater degree of sincerity, say “Thank you for my life.” An induction to the exploration of rapport with self, and to no end.
Because aside from enabling the practitioner to truly understand the complex mechanics of how human beings generate their experience, and can have the new experiences they want made available—Marin Style NLP respects the many dimensions of a human being’s precious journey called Life.
Like gravity, it’s always there in motion, governing the many motions of man.
While it is lesser known globally, decades from now, humanity will look back to its archives and recognize how significant a contribution the Marin Style body of change work has, to the understanding that humanity has of itself, and Life itself. That is my sincerest prophesy for this life.
Though it is up to no One specifically, to see it through. Not to Carl Buchheit, its founder. Not to Michelle Masters, or Carla Camou. Not to my contribution. But because of the countless contributions from us collective souls who share the common intention to see the work be immortalized.
